2012 Trades Union Councils Annual Conference
Coventry Trades Union Council plays host to the annual conference of the trades union councils which takes place this year at the Britannia Hotel, Fairfax Street, Coventry, on 12th and 13th May.
The number of registered trades union councils continues to grow. The TUCJCC secretariat and members of the TUCJCC were very proactive encouraging trades union councils to register. Their hard work resulted in a record number of registrations -166 Trades Union Councils and 25 County Associations. This is compared with 157 and 23, respectively, in 2010 and 125 and 22 for 2009.
Over eighty delegates are expected to attend the conference to discuss motions which range from fighting the cuts, defending public services and supporting the unemployed to the role of the trades union councils with the TUC and trade union movement.
The conference will be addressed by Unite General Secretary Len McCluskey as well as RMT General Secretary Bob Crow, who will also Chair the conference. Well known campaigner and feminist Mary Ann Stephenson will also speak to the conference on the effects of government policies on women and women's working lives.
There will be workshops on Fighting Fascism and the Far Right, Women and the Cuts and Organising and Campaigning in the Community all lead by the TUC's Midland TU Education Unit.
There will also be a public meeting, hosted by Coventry Trades Union Council, on the eve of conference - 7.00pm Friday 11th May at the Britannia Hotel, Coventry. Speakers include Christine Blower (General Secretary NUT), Matt Wrack (General Secretary FBU) and Nick Parker (Young Trade Unionist of the Year). There will also be a speaker from the 'Sparks' campaign (UNITE) who beat off the bosses attacks on their pay through a series of strikes and campaigns.
